Experimental and Numerical Investigations on the Impact of Surface Conditions on Self-Piercing Riveted Joint Quality

In this study, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the impact surface conditions on self-piercing riveting (SPR) joint quality. Oil lubrication sandpaper grinding employed in tests change at rivet/top sheet, top/bottom sheets bottom sheet/die interfaces. A finite element (FE) model for SPR process was also adopted numerically assess conditions. Variations modelled by changing friction coefficients contact The results revealed that coefficient between rivet top sheet (μ1) imposed significant influences interlock (I1) affecting deformation shank sheet. (μ2) showed lower influence quality because smaller area shorter interaction time. (μ3) led opposite trends remaining thickness centre (tc) under tip (ttip). die (μ4) demonstrated crucial centre. force significantly influenced throughout whole μ1, but only affected end joining other three coefficients.
